It’s been a great year for many celebrities: some just fell in love, some got engaged and some took the plunge into holy matrimony. From royalties to country or pop singers, actors or reality show stars, everyone in love said ‘I do’ with more or less pomp. But enough with the chit chat, let’s see who are the rich and famous who tied the knot in 2011 and whose nuptials have been an inspiration for all of you out there who plan to do the same thing next year.
Prince William and Kate Middleton
This is not a top list but Prince William, the second in line to the British throne, who wed his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton, on April 29, 2011 is definitely worth mentioned first no matter what. The young royal couple who won the sympathy and admiration of all Europeans, exchanged vows in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey in London. Their fatuous, fairytale wedding captured the attention of people all over the world and it became a historical event.
Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock
Prince Albert II of Monaco is now officially a married man. He gave up his status of the most wanted bachelor and married South African Charlene Wittstock. The long-awaited civil ceremony, which took place on July 1, 2011, transformed the one-time Olympic swimmer into the Princess of Monaco but, unlike Kate Middleton, Charlene didn’t smiled at her wedding. She had a luxurious ceremony and a bashing party but her eyes were soaked with sadness because of the prince’s infidelity and illegitimate children. Even so, she entered history not only because of her ravishing nuptials but because she succeeded Hollywood beauty Grace Kelly, who wed Albert’s father Prince Rainier III in 1956 and died in a car accident nearly three decades ago.
Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell
Sir Paul McCartney, who is listed in Guinness World Records as the “most successful musician and composer in popular music history”, having 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles in the United Kingdom alone, found his true love and married American heiress Nancy Shevell. They exchanged rings on Oct. 9, 2011, in an afternoon civil ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London. The 51-year-old bride wore a long-sleeved, v-neck, knee-length ivory dress with a flower in her hair, and McCartney, 69, wore a navy suit, both designed by his daughter Stella McCartney. His youngest daughter, 7-year-old Beatrice, served as their flower girl. This was the former Beatle’s third marriage and Shevell’s second.
Michael Bublé and Luisana Lopilato
Canadian crooner Michael Bublé got married this year and he couldn’t be more happy. The Grammy-winning singer said ‘I do’ to Argentine TV actress Luisana Lopilato in a civil ceremony on March 31, 2011, in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina. She wore a lilac chiffon dress with silver high heels, and Bublé wore a sharp gray suit. After that, they had a full ceremony with hundreds of guests.
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth
Reese Witherspoon married agent Jim Toth on March 26, 2011 in a less sumptuous ceremony. The couple, who got engaged in December 2010, wed on Witherspoon’s estate in Ojai, Calif. and it was more like a country wedding. People magazine reported that wedding guests included Witherspoon’s kids (with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe), Ava and Deacon, along with Sean Penn, Scarlett Johansson, Renee Zellweger and Robert Downey.
Shannen Doherty and Kurt Iswarienko
“Beverly Hills 90210” star Shannen Doherty married for the third time this year. Us Weekly reported that she wore a Monique Lhuillier gown for her walk down the aisle, where her beau, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, was expecting her, and that she donned three dresses in all on her big day. The couple exchanged vows on Oct. 15, 2011, in California, in front of cameras that were filming for Doherty’s reality show, “Shannen Says.”
Robin Williams and Susan Schneider
Actor Robin Williams, who has three children from two previous marriages, married graphic designer Susan Schneider on Oct. 23, 2011, in California’s Napa Valley. The actor met Schneider in 2009, according to The Guardian, shortly before undergoing heart surgery and after his divorce from previous wife, Marsha.
Shania Twain and Frederic Thiebaud
Shania Twain married the man whose wife was Twain’s mistress. The singer and business executive Frederic Thiebaud linked up officially in 2009 after splitting with their respective spouses and this year they got married in Puerto Rico, on Jan. 1, 2011, less than two weeks after their engagement was made public.
Sinead O’Connor and Barry Herridge
The Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor had, one may say, the most special wedding of the year. And we say special because we don’t like the word “weird.” The singer who once ravished men’s hearts not only with her voice but with her outstanding beauty too, tied the knot with Irish therapist Barry Herridge on Dec. 8, 2011 on her 45th birthday, while sitting in the back of pink Cadillac in Las Vegas. No guests, no white dress, no traditions, no pomp. “I’ve been married before, but I’ve never had my dream wedding in Vegas. I wanted to do it there because it’s casual, quick, not religious and, most of all, very romantic,” O’Connor said, according to Reuters. Unfortunately, their marriage ended after 16 days.
Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert
Country singer Miranda Lambert married her best friend, country singer Blake Shelton on May 14, 2011 in front of 550 family members and friends at the Don Strange Ranch in Boerne, Texas. “Looking forward to a lifetime of laughter,” said the bride, who wore her mother’s wedding gown.
Kate Moss and Jamie Hince
The famous supermodel and The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince wed on July 1, 2011 in the Cotswolds, a 17th century castle in England in a vintage ceremony. Even the bride and the groom were dressed in vintage-looking clothes; the nuptials were simple and lacked the sparkle supermodels are usually surrounded by.
Leann Rhimes and Eddie Cibrian
Country singer LeAnn Rimes and “CSI: Miami” actor Eddie Cibrian married on April 22, 2011 in front of about 40 guests, who were led to believe they’d been invited to an engagement party, according to People magazine. 28-year-old bride and 37-year-old groom met while filming the TV movie “Northern Lights”, when they were both married to other people.
A.J. McLean and Rochelle Karidis
Backstreet Boys singer A.J. McLean wed his girlfriend, Rochelle Karidis, on Dec. 17, 2011, in Los Angeles, during a gothic-themed ceremony. Fellow Backstreet Boys member Howie Dorough told CBSNews.com, “It was unbelievable and crazy. I wouldn’t expect anything different from A.J. Very gothic, very out there. It was lots of fun. All the guys were there. We partied. We danced our butts off.”
Caleb Followill and Lily Aldridge
Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill and Victoria’s Secret supermodel Lily Aldridge, who wore a white Vera Wang gown, according to Us Weekly, married in an intimate ceremony at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, Calif. on May 12.
Unfortunately, the list of celebrities who tied the knot this year is too long to write about, but we could mention names such as:
KISS member Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed who wed on Oct. 1, 2011 in front of 400 guests;
Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo who became husband and wife on July 18, 2011, in a surprise ceremony at a tropical island in front of 35 friends and family;
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz who tied the knot in a secret ceremony on June 22, 2011, in New York in front of two close friends and their children;
Molly Sims who said ‘I do’ to Hollywood producer Scott Stuber in front of close family and friends on Sept. 24, 2011, in Napa Valley, Calif.
The former “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera and longtime boyfriend Ryan Piers Williams who married on June 27, 2011 in an intimate setting amongst close friends and family;
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian and NBA player Kris Humphries, who tied the knot on Aug. 20, 2011 only to file for divorce after 72 days of marriage; Brooke Burke and David Charvet ; NFL quarterback Tony Romo and Candice Crawford and so on.
